SUMMARY:Secret surveillance: countering spyware’s threats to freedom of the press and expression
DESCRIPTION:Church Center\, 777 United Nations Plaza\, New York\, NY 10017 \n\n\n\n\nGrowing evidence from civil society shows that governments across the world have relentlessly used targeted surveillance technology against journalists. From Hungary and Poland to Thailand\, El Salvador to Jordan\, journalists and media workers have been the targets of invasive and rapidly-advancing spyware. \n\n\n\nThe intersectional impacts of spyware illustrate the theme of this year’s World Press Freedom Day\, “Freedom of expression as a driver for all other human rights.” Spyware deters independent reporting and investigations into political corruption and human rights violations\, and by consequence\, hinders justice and accountability.  \n\n\n\nMulti-sectoral stakeholders from around the world have joined civil society’s efforts urging the international community to put an end to this abuse.
