Google has taken a major stand against the growing global threat of internet censorship by saying no to China's firewall, but the pressure is on for Google to back down as it commences its much publicized negotiations with the Chinese regime over the coming weeks.
“Right now, Google is effectively telling the Chinese government that they will pull out of China if they aren't able to operate in an unfiltered and peaceful cyber environment. But saying goodbye to over 300 million potential customers is a big economic and political deal - and one that will be hard for Google to follow through with, despite their best intentions,” said Brett Solomon, Executive Director or Accessnow.org
If Google stays strong however, it will change the way that corporates, governments and people approach the internet - and potentially give hundreds of millions back their fundamental rights of freedom of speech and privacy.
Accessnow.org has started a global 'stay strong Google' petition in support of their announcement and already people from across the world have signed up. The text of the petition is as follows:
"Google, we support you to stand firm against online censorship and surveillance. Protection of human rights, including freedom of expression and privacy, must be central to any ongoing business engagement within China and beyond."
